Lake Arenal—Costa Rica’s largest lake, which sits in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano—was enlarged to three times its original size following the volcano’s major 1968 eruption. According to Arenal.net, the Lake Arenal’s basin now forms a hydroelectric project that produces 9 percent of Costa Rica’s electricity.
