Exploring this year’s theme
Through expert speakers, guided workshops, and student-led projects, you’ll dive into the importance of Creating a Sustainable Future as it relates to these three pillars:
-
From climate change to clean energy—what’s our role in preserving the planet for future generations?
-
What are ways we can overcome conflict in order to build more peaceful, just, and inclusive societies?
-
How can we increase equal access to essential resources and protect the well-being of all people?
Your 2023 Keynote speaker
Bash (as his friends call him) is a National Geographic Explorer and has dedicated his life to understanding the human condition and discovering what makes a happy, meaningful life. He believes personal happiness contributes to both individual and global well-being—each of which are critical components in creating a sustainable future. To find it, he’s worked with suicide prevention activists, lived with nomads in Mongolia, faced the heaviest Sumo wrestlers, and much more.

Melati Wijsen
Melati, who will be speaking alongside her sister, has taken her passions and turned them into a full-time job making change and building movements. Since getting started as an activist at age 12, she hasn’t slowed down. She’s given TED talks and had her film, Bigger Than Us, premier at the Cannes Film Festival. Recently, Melati launched YOUTHTOPIA, a platform that gives young changemakers the tools they need to succeed.

Isabel Wijsen
You’re not seeing double. Isabel is indeed Melati’s sister and Summit speaking partner. At just 10 years old, she co-founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags with her older sister. In 2019, after six years of campaigning (alongside other like-minded organizations), she helped convince the Balinese government to officially ban plastic bags and straws.

Fehinti Balogun
Calling Fehinti an actor, producer, and activist somehow undersells all that he’s doing. In addition to roles in Dune and I May Destroy You, he wrote and performed in Can I Live?—a piece that combines spoken word, rap, theater, and more. Fehinti’s production explores the intimate relationship between the climate emergency and the global struggle for social justice, and how, as a young Black British man, he found his place in the climate movement.

Aidan ReillyProtecting People
From his dorm room, Aidan co-founded The Farmlink Project, which has provided over 100 million pounds of nutritious food to hungry communities in the U.S. and works to reduce waste in the food system.
The power of design thinking
Over the course of the weekend, you’ll journey through the six key steps of design thinking with your group. First, you’ll define a problem related to sustainability that’s unique to one person (your “user”). Then, after a weekend of brainstorming potential solutions, you’ll develop a physical prototype that addresses your user’s need, and share this with your peers and teachers.
Think big.
Like, Nobel Prize-level big.
Fueled by a common belief that in order to change the world you need to experience it, EF partners with the Nobel Prize Museum to inspire students to pursue bold goals and think differently about the world around them. So after three days of developing a project through design-thinking exercises, Summit participants get to pitch their prototypes to a panel of judges for the chance to be featured in the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.
