Hotels and rooming
Set accommodation expectations
Hotels Hotels abroad are often not as modern or standardized as they are in North America. Review the information below and share it with your travelers before you depart so everyone knows what to expect.
- Rooms are usually smaller and have multiple single and/or shared double beds.
- Rooms seldom have air conditioning or televisions.
- Not all European hotels have elevators.
- Groups may not all be roomed next to each other and may be on different floors.
Trains, cruises and ferries - Sleeping compartments on trains are very small, and there are no single or double rooms. Adults and students room in couchettes of up to six beds that fold down from the wall. Couchettes may not be exclusive to EF travelers and may be co-ed. Travelers share bathrooms on trains.
- Ferry accommodations vary depending on the tour. Generally, adults and students room in cabins of up to four beds. Single rooms are not available on overnight ferries, overnight trains or tours to Africa.
Discuss rooming arrangements and upgrades
StudentsRooming arrangements for students are determined on tour; students do not need to request roommates prior to departure. Students under age 20 will automatically room with two or three other travelers of the same gender from their group or other groups on tour in rooms with single or shared double beds. Students who prefer a twin room can pay a fee prior to departure in order to upgrade.
AdultsTravelers age 20 and older will automatically share twin rooms with other adults of the same gender from the entire group. Couples may request a room with a double bed for no extra charge. Adults can pay an additional fee to upgrade to a single room. Provide your tour consultant with roommate requests as soon as possible to ensure each adult can share a room with another adult of his or her choosing.
