What are Continuing Education Units (CEUs)? Who needs to earn them?

Continuing Education Units are measures of professional development for educators. In some states, CEUs are known as professional development points. The purpose of the CEU is to provide educators with a permanent record of their professional development experiences. In many cases, earning CEUs is required in order for educators to maintain their professional certification and advance in their salary scale.

How will EF CEUs help educators?

EF coursework allows educators to meet various content-based and pedagogical teaching standards. The EF course provides educators with a formal way to make sense of the experiential learning that takes place during educational travel, and to guide students to learn, reflect and utilize their newfound knowledge and life skills. Depending on specific school, district and state requirements, CEUs are used to enable educators to develop professionally, maintain their certification, and advance in their salary scales.

Why do many schools accept EF CEUs as a valuable form of professional development?

EF is an accredited educational provider, just like the best schools throughout the United States. EF’s credit course is rigorous, aligned to standards, and was created by a panel of educational experts. It requires that educators apply complex critical thinking to make sense of their travels for themselves and their students. The course requires substantial time and resources—educators who complete all course requirements have done more useful work than almost any other continuing education course requires.

What is the process necessary to follow for schools to accept EF CEUs?

Before completing all required coursework, EF Group Leaders should gain EF CEU acceptance approval from whichever administrator oversees their professional development program. This process differs by school. Please refer questions to this Frequently Asked Questions list or email credit@ef.com with questions not addressed in this list.

With which professional development standards does EF’s educator course align?

The EF educator course aligns to pedagogical standards designed by the National Council for Staff Development, the National Board for Professional Development Standards and curriculum standards from the National Council for the Social Studies. In addition, the course aligns to pedagogical and content-based curriculum standards supported by other state and national discipline-oriented associations.

How are educators evaluated?

Educators must complete their coursework and their self-assessment overview. Upon successful completion of course requirements, they must report their passing grade in the grading section of this personal Group Leader Site. EF will randomly spot check educators' work to verify accountability. Educators who report a passing grade without completing course requirements will not receive CEU documentation from EF and will not be eligible to earn future credits from EF until they satisfactorily complete all course requirements.

What will educators receive upon successful completion of their EF course?

Upon successful completion of their EF course and self-assessment (subject to random checks by EF), educators will receive an official EF transcript documenting their two CEUs.
