International Travel For Teachers And Students

Accreditation information for students
How can students earn high school credit?*

  • Take a tour with EF
  • Complete our one-credit elective course with assignments before, during and after your tour
  • Pay $100 (Note: through the 2010 travel season, it's FREE)
  • Pass course with letter grade based on teacher’s assessment

How do I enroll?
Students already registered for an EF tour can enroll to earn credit by accessing the accreditation section in their personal online account or by registering through their tour consultant.

Students who have not yet registered for an EF Tour should contact their group leader. Once signed up for an EF tour, students can enroll to earn credit.

What does the student course require?
In order to enroll for EF credit, students must be enrolled on an EF Educational Tour or Smithsonian Student Travel program. The student credit requires that students prepare for their tour by reading several fiction and non-fiction sources and completing pre-tour coursework in travel journals. On-tour, students must fulfill a photo assignment and several standards-correlated travel journal assignments. Upon returning, students are required to write essays on the books they read, answer reflective questions associated with their tour experience, and complete two thematic essays. In total, the credit program requires at least 100 hours of coursework, which equals the equivalent of one semester’s work. To access the full course overview (8-page booklet), students should log in to their personal online accounts.

Why students should take this course and why schools should accept EF's high school elective credit:

  • EF is the only international educational travel company to be accredited by the Commission on Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA), the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (MSCES) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This means that all of EF’s international and domestic tours have been recognized for their quality and educational value, meeting the same rigorous standards as the best schools across the U.S.
  • EF's course requirements include 100 hours of preparation, as well as on-tour work and post-tour reflective analysis
  • EF's course provides a formal structure for educators to document the work that goes into leading a tour and to provide students with valuable learning experiences outside the classroom
  • EF's course enables educators to develop professionally as global citizens and to transfer that learning to their students
  • EF's course addresses global connections standards that are often difficult to meet in the classroom
  • EF’s course provides educators with a way to quantify the knowledge and experience they have gained on tour, and to help bring that knowledge of the world to their students
  • EF's course was created by educators and approved by EF Educational Tours' educational advisory board

EWU International Field Studies Program
Through a unique partnership with Eastern Washington University, EF is able to offer group leaders and student travelers the opportunity to earn valuable academic credit while traveling on an EF Educational Tour or a Smithsonian Student Travel tour. Earning academic credit with EWU enhances every part of the educational experience—before, during, and after your EF tour. Credits are fully transferable and will be documented on an official transcript.

Eastern Washington University's International Field Studies Program was established to provide students and teachers who are participating in educational travel programs with the opportunity to increase their understanding and tolerance of foreign people and places, develop confidence in themselves as world observers, and expand their appreciation of education as part of their vital partner in achieving educational goals.
